overview - Highway On My Plate: The Indian Guide To Roadside Eating
Highway On My Plate: The Indian Guide to Roadside Eating caters to a lot of readers, ranging from those who have recently traveled to the subcontinent to the locals of the country. This book is a good resource that’s ideal for those who don’t want to miss out on the diverse cuisines that India offers, and are looking for the perfect guide to good eating.
Written by popular anchors Rocky Singh and Mayur Sharma, this book is a spin on the famous show with the same name that’s aired on NDTV Good Times and hosted by the authors themselves. The places and eateries that they have visited on the show come alive again on the pages of this food guide.
The first of its kind, this book lists all the major dhabas, restaurants, and local eateries that serve everything from breakfast items to full-course meals. It covers almost all the major highways in India. It provides details about every state, the major cities, and the main eateries, and provides indispensable information regarding the specialities, rating, quality, service, and the prices in such places.
From Chawani Lal Halwai in Rajasthan, which is famous for its kachoris, to Puran Singh Ka Dhaba, a place that is renowned for its meat curries, the book satisfies the whims of every reader in 336 pages. It also provides road maps for different destinations, and also provides details on restaurants based on criteria like hygiene and child-friendliness.
Published in the year 2010, this book quickly made its way into every traveler’s go-to resource collection. It was well received right upon its release.
About The Authors
The book has been written in a fairly light-hearted and informative manner. A lot of research has been undertaken by both the authors and this is clearly reflected in their writing.
Rocky Singh hails from a military background, and his father, Amarjeet Singh Hundal was a war-hero who was killed during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. A connoisseur of food, Rocky travels around the world, sampling cuisines from everywhere. He has previously worked as a gas distributor, and with British Airways. He once even managed a restaurant, and is currently an HR consultant and GM of a corporate training organization. He has a wife and two kids, and enjoys golfing and traveling.
Mayur Sharma hails from a similar background, as he is the son of a retired IAF (Indian Air Force) officer. He is an outdoor experiential educator, and his areas of interest are productive group dynamics and interpersonal client relationships.
The two also host another show called Jai Hind With Rocky and Mayur.
