Only Time Will Tell Overview

The Clifton Chronicles is Jeffrey Archer's most ambitious work in four decades as an international bestselling author. The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, 'I was told that my father was killed in the war'. But it will be another twenty years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead him to question who was his father. Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line.

Only Time will Tell covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that The Times has compared to The Forsyte Saga. Volume one takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford, or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. In Jeffrey Archer's masterful hands, the reader is taken on a journey that they won't want to end, and when you turn the last page of this unforgettable yarn, you will be faced with a dilemma that neither you, nor Harry Clifton could have anticipated.

About The Author

Jeffrey Howard Archer, Born Archer of Weston super Mare is an English author, convicted criminal, and former politician. Alongside his literary work, Archer was a Member of Parliament, deputy chairman of the Conservative Party (1985 to 86) and was made a life peer in 1992. Having suffered several controversies, his political career ended with his conviction and subsequent imprisonment (2001 to 03) for perjury and perverting the course of justice. He was born in the City of London Maternity Hospital. He was two weeks old when his family moved to the seaside town of Weston super Mare, Somerset, where he spent most of his early life. His father, William (died 1956), was sixty four when Archer was born. In 1951, he won a scholarship to Wellington School, in Somerset not to be confused with the public school Wellington College, which is possible from the ambiguous biography in Archer's earlier books. At this time his mother, Lola, contributed a column Over the teacups to the local press in Weston super Mare and wrote about the adventures of her son Tuppence this caused Archer to be the victim of bullying while at Wellington School.
