overview - The Secret Of The Nagas
The Secret of the Nagas by Amish Tripathi is the sequel to the national bestseller, The Immortals of Meluha. In this second book of the Shiva trilogy Amish interprets the evolution of a simple man into the divine almighty. The sinister Naga warrior has killed his friend Brahaspati and now stalks his wife Sati. Shiva, the Tibetan immigrant destined to destroy all evil will not rest till he finds his demonic adversary. His determination to avenge all evil leads him to the door of the Nagas or the serpent people. Shiva is in pursuit of the truth in a land of mysteries, only to discover that nothing is as it seems. There is a malicious rise of evil and the kingdom is dying as it is held ransom for a miracle drug. The crown prince is murdered and the Vasudev`s, Shiva's philosopher guides, take to the dark side, betraying his faith. Fierce battles will be fought and surprising alliances will be forged.
About the Author
Amish Tripathi is an alumnus of IIM (Kolkata) and was a banker before he turned author. The success of his debut book, The Immortals of Meluha (Book 1 of the Shiva Trilogy), encouraged him to give up a fourteen year old career in financial services to focus on writing. He is passionate about history, mythology and philosophy. Though Hindu mythology is intermingled with religious beliefs, the author steers clear of creed and worship. His works mainly focus on the Hindu philosophy than Hindu religious beliefs.
Book Plot
The story begins where The Immortals of Meluha ended. Shiva rushes to save Sati from the Naga who escapes, dropping a coin with strange engravings. After consulting with Daksha and Dilipa, the king of Ayodhya, they come to know that the coin belongs to King Chandraketu, the ruler of the land of Branga in eastern India. Shiva and Sati travel to Kashi, where a community of Brangas inhabit, in order to get more information on the Nagas. They are accompanied in their journey by Parvateshwar, Nandi, Veerbhadra, Krittika, Ayurvati, and Bhagirath and Anandamayi, the prince and princess of Ayodhya. At Kashi, Parvateshwar gets mortally injured while trying to pacify a riot at the Branga community. Bhagirath is given a medicine by the Branga leader Divodas to administer on Parvateshwar. The medicine works and Parvateshwar is healed, but Shiva comes to know from Ayurvati that the medicine contains herbs which is only available at Panchavati, the capital of the Nagas. He consults with Divodas and comes to know that Branga suffers from a plague, which has led them to ally with the Nagas, in return for benefits. Shiva decides to travel to Branga but Divodas informs him that to reach there special ships need to be made, which would take about six months.
